Built in 1867, Tybee Island Lighthouse is George's oldest and tallest light. The present-day lighthouse is the fourth lighthouse constructed. War and weather led to the demise of the the other lighthouses. The current lighthouse was built upon the first 60 feet of the previous tower.
With three female keepers, the early 1870s could be considered the year of the woman at Tybee Island Lighthouse. Mrs. Francis O. Sickel served as Assistant Light Keeper 1870-1873. Second Assistant Light Keepers: Mrs. M.L. Cohen 1869-1870, Emma Manchester 1870.
